課程概述

This course is an introduction to Mandarin, the official language of China and Taiwan, and one of the official languages of Singapore. It aims to master Mandarin pronunciation, and to develop ability to engage in simple, practical conversations in ways that are culturally and sociolinguistically appropriate. Students will also acquire a basic proficiency in the reading and writing in traditional characters. Thorough preparation is an essential requirement of this course. Students are expected to study the course materials thoroughly prior to each class in order to effectively participate in the classroom activities. In addition, during the process of language learning, students will also learn basic information about Chinese culture and traditions.

課程要求
 • No make-up for the quizzes will be granted, as the two lowest grades will be dropped at the end of the semester. If a student is sick or unable to make it to class due to unexpected situations, he/she should inform the instructor as soon as possible. Quizzes are typically held first thing every day in class, so punctuality is extremely important.
• Documented emergencies (medical or family) qualify for make-ups for unit tests, and midterm and final examinations with no penalty; otherwise, make-up tests will be with 10% off the initial marks awarded and should be completed within one week. One unit test will be dropped at the end of the semester.
• Late homework will be corrected but receive no credit. Sloppy homework and homework with too many errors will be returned for resubmission.
• Attendance to and thorough preparation for each individual session are mandatory.
• College policies concerning academic dishonesty will be strictly enforced.
• All cell phones should be turned off while class is in session.
• No eating is allowed in class.
